There is a story running in your mind right now โ and you probably don't know it's there.
Not a story you consciously chose. Not one you'd necessarily agree with if someone stated it plainly. But a story that shapes what you pursue, what you avoid, what you believe is possible for you. This story, which is running below the surface, is creating your results.
This is what we call a limiting belief. And in my experience working with clients through major life transitions, there is almost always one core belief underneath the surface noise โ one root assumption that is quietly running the whole show.
"You don't have a strategy problem. You have a belief problem. And beliefs, unlike circumstances, can be changed."
What Limiting Beliefs Actually Look Like
Limiting beliefs rarely announce themselves as beliefs. They disguise themselves as facts. They sound like:
- "I'm too old to start something new."
- "People like me don't get to have that kind of life."
- "I've never been good at [fill in the blank]."
- "It's too late."
- "I'm not the kind of person who..."
Notice the certainty in each of those statements. That's the tell. Limiting beliefs feel like observations of reality when they are actually interpretations of it โ interpretations that were formed long ago, often in childhood or early adulthood, and never updated.
Where They Come From
Most of our core limiting beliefs were formed before we had the capacity to evaluate them critically. We absorbed them from parents, teachers, peers, early experiences of failure or rejection. A child who struggles in school and hears "you're not a math person" enough times becomes an adult who avoids financial planning, not because of the math, but because of the story.
These beliefs aren't your fault. But they are your responsibility โ because you're the only one who can change them.
A Simple Tool to Uncover Yours
Here is an exercise I use with my coaching clients called the Completion Method. Find a quiet space and complete each of the following sentences as quickly and honestly as you can โ without editing yourself. Write down whatever comes:
- I would go after what I really want, but...
- The reason I can't have the life I desire is...
- People like me don't...
- I've always believed that I am someone who...
- The thing I'm most afraid people would find out about me is...
Read your answers back slowly. Somewhere in there, you'll find it โ the core assumption that has been operating below the surface. It often sounds painfully simple once you see it written down. Things like: "I don't deserve it." Or: "Success means leaving people behind." Or: "I'm not smart/talented/worthy enough."
Finding it isn't the hard part. What matters is what you do next.
How to Begin Dissolving It
In the Brave Thinking methodology, we don't fight limiting beliefs โ we replace them. Fighting a belief gives it energy. Instead, we practice what I call planting the counter-truth: consciously, repeatedly choosing a more expansive belief, even before you fully believe it.
This isn't about positive affirmations you recite without conviction. It's about deliberately rehearsing a new thought until the neural pathway strengthens โ until the new belief becomes more familiar than the old one.
For example:
- Old belief: "I'm too old to start over."
- Counter-truth: "Everything I've learned makes me exactly right for what's next."
- Old belief: "I don't deserve a life I love."
- Counter-truth: "I was created with desires for a reason, and I am worthy of pursuing them."
You don't have to believe it completely on day one. You just have to be willing to hold it as a possibility.
"Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space lies our freedom. And in that freedom lies our growth."
You Were Made for More Than This
The limiting belief that is running your life right now is not the truth about you. It is a story. And stories โ unlike circumstances โ can be rewritten.
That is the work I am honored to do alongside my clients. Not telling you what to believe, but helping you see clearly what you currently believe, question whether it's actually true, and choose something better.
Because the life you're longing for? It's not blocked by your circumstances. It's blocked by a story. And you have the power to change the story.
